Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Recognizing that systemic inequalities and discrimination exist in higher education more broadly as well as in our discipline, the Irish Studies in Asia Committee is committed to fostering an accessible, inclusive, equitable, and respectful environment for learning and scholarship. We value individual differences and want to ensure that no-one is at a disadvantage because of who they are or where they happen to be from. We strive to use inclusive language and encourage presenters to do the same.

ISA’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is ongoing and multi-faceted. It is expected to evolve and improve as a result of member engagement, feedback, and a growing understanding of what it means to build a truly inclusive organization committed to the scientific study of language, literature and culture in Ireland.

As such, we seek to enable all participants to achieve their full potential in an environment characterised by equality of respect and opportunity. To that end, we:

  1. Make every effort to ensure that all events take place in accessible physical locations with appropriate access points for those with additional access needs.

  2. Offer social activities in addition to the academic program which highlight not only cultural and linguistic legacies but also the inequities they induce.

  3. Instigate a robust system of anonymous peer review.
